Menzerna Reference Shine Kit
A kit recommendation by Terry Freiberg

This kit contains all the products I use to create a "Show Quality Shine" on my Pewter finished sedan. I've designed this kit for vehicles three years old or newer with paint that is in "good" condition.

If you have an older vehicle or a vehicle with neglected or severely oxidized paint, it should be compounded after Step One, before proceeding to Polishing, Step Two. I like Menzerna PO203 used with an Orange Power Pad for this step.

Each of the steps I go through are outlined in this article: Creating Menzerna's Reference Shine.

At the heart of my system is the new Porter Cable 7424XP Ultimate Detailing Machine which comes with a flexible, hook-and-loop, backing plate that allows easy pad changes. I use this machine to polish, glaze and apply the final sealant. Use the machine to apply products and buff off residues by hand using a Microfiber Buffing Cloth (included in this Reference Shine Kit.)

Step One - Remove paint contamination and create a smooth paint surface.

Paint contamination can be felt as a "rough or gritty" texture on the paint's surface and can lead to tiny rust spots. This contamination can not be removed by washing, waxing and/or polishing. I start with our BLACKFIRE PolyClay II Kit to QUICKLY and SAFELY remove surface contamination and make gritty, rough and bumpy paint smooth as glass.

This kit includes two, 4 oz. bars of PolyClay, a 16 oz. spray bottle of Clay Lubricant, two Microfiber Wipe Cloths and instructions.

Step Two - Polish and Glaze.

After creating a smooth paint surface with the clay bar and lubricant, I polish the finish to maximize surface gloss and visually reduce minor swirls and imperfections. I use Menzerna Final Polish II with the CCS, 6-1/2 inch, White Polishing Pad. If your car is new, use the White Pad. If your car has some minor swirls, spots or blemishes, use the optional Orange Power Pad.

Apply the polish by machine. Wipe off residues by hand using a Microfiber Wipe Cloth (included).

After polishing, I apply a glaze. This improves the paint's brilliance and helps mask any remaining swirls or imperfections remaining after polishing. I apply Menzerna Finishing Touch Glaze using a CCS, 6-1/2 inch, Black Glazing/Finessing Pad. Again, I apply the glaze by machine and buff off residues by hand using a Microfiber Wipe Cloth.

Step Three - Finish with FMJ.

FMJ (Full Molecular Jacket) is Menzerna's new "super wax". Technically it's not a wax but an acrylic, polymer, paint protectant or sealant. It has become our single largest selling "wax" and for good reason. FMJ uses state-of-the-art, super-polymers to project a remarkably clear, emotionally vibrant shine with a shimmering liquidity. It's the type of shine that grabs your attention and demands to be noticed.

I apply FMJ by machine with a CCS, 6-1/2 inch, Red, Concours Finishing Pad and buff off residues by hand using a Perfect Shine Buffing Cloth (included).

Maintenance

For normal washing and maintenance, I've included a bottle of Menzerna Auto Shampoo and a spray bottle of Menzerna High Gloss Acrylic Shield. This spray sealant contains the same super slippery, acrylic polymer used in Menzerna FMJ.

Use High Gloss Acrylic Shield after washing or anytime to remove dust, fingerprints and smudges and restore a "just detailed" shine.

Note: Nothing in this kit is particularly difficult but with the number of steps involved, this is not a kit I would recommend for the car care beginner. If you're an enthusiast and been thinking about stepping up to a machine polisher, the products in this kit will allow you to create a spectacular, show-quality shine.
